Prushinsky Chapel-Tomb

Prushinsky Chapel-Tomb

3 min. to read

Prushinsky Chapel-Tomb — These are majestic ruins located in Loshitsky Park in Minsk. Built in 1788 in the Vilnius Baroque style, the chapel initially served not only as a place of worship but also as a family tomb for the Prushinsky family, who owned the estate from the early 18th century until the second half of the 19th century.

History and Architecture

Built on the initiative of Joseph Prushinsky, the chapel was consecrated under the title of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In its basements rested many generations of the Prushinsky family, priests, and prominent local residents. The unique architecture of the chapel included eight walls with a tented roof crowned by a helmet-shaped dome. The walls were adorned with pilasters and covered with plaster, giving them a majestic appearance. In 1935, the chapel was partially destroyed: explosives were planted in it, but the strength of its structure and special acoustics, thanks to resonators in the walls, allowed it to survive. Shortly after this, in the 1940s, the chapel was used as a munitions depot, which led to its final destruction during the retreat of troops in World War II. Today, only three walls remain.

Interesting Facts

The chapel is surrounded by mystical legends and is a popular spot for tourists and researchers. Although it has survived only as ruins, the majestic size and thickness of its walls can still be seen, along with the unique resonators that once enhanced its acoustics. According to local legends, the lead coffin of Jadwiga Lubanskaya, the wife of the last owner of Loshitsa, was once stored in the chapel.

Restoration and Modernity

In the 1990s, attempts to restore the chapel began, but a lack of funding and unfavorable government attitudes hindered the projects. Nevertheless, interest in the chapel continues to grow, and local residents hope for its restoration. Today, the Prushinsky Chapel-Tomb remains an important part of Loshitsky Park and a symbol of its rich history.

Conclusion

The Prushinsky Chapel-Tomb is not only an architectural treasure but also a historical monument worth visiting for anyone interested in Belarus's cultural heritage. The nature surrounding the ruins and their mysterious history make this place unique and attractive to all lovers of history and architecture.
