Sendai Square

3 min. to read

Sendai Square in Minsk is a unique corner of nature and tranquility, located right in the city center, between Myasnikova and Nemiga Streets, next to the Belarusian State Musical Theater. This small yet elegant park was created in 2002 to celebrate the sister-city relationship between Minsk and the Japanese city of Sendai and has since become a symbol of friendship between Belarus and Japan. One of the main attractions of Sendai Square is the street clock from Citizen. It’s not just a functional element but a true work of art, powered by solar energy and showing dual time: Minsk and Sendai. These clocks, a gift from the residents of Sendai, add uniqueness and special charm to this place. The square is adorned with many rare and exotic trees and shrubs, among which the alley of mountain cherry trees—one of Japan’s most recognizable symbols—stands out. In spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom, the square is filled with delicate pink hues and becomes a favorite spot for walks and photos. The architecture and landscape of the square are designed in Japanese style. You can find a small Japanese garden here with a stone stream, bonsai trees, and bamboo bridges, creating an atmosphere of coziness and harmony. Complementing this atmosphere is a fountain with granite theatrical masks, from which thin streams of water flow, as well as decorative reeds. The square is also decorated with sculptural compositions, such as the “Batleika”—a bronze installation inspired by the traditional Belarusian puppet theater, which adds local color to the park. Throughout the square, there are comfortable benches where you can relax and enjoy the sounds of trickling water and rustling leaves. This place is ideal for those who want to take a moment away from the city’s hustle and bustle, immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Japanese culture, and enjoy natural beauty in the heart of Minsk.
