Mikhailovsky Square

Mikhailovsky Square

2 min. to read

Mikhailovsky Square, located in the center of Minsk, is a popular and cozy place for residents and visitors to the capital to relax. The square is situated in the Oktyabrsky district, near Leningradskaya, Sverdlova, Kirova Streets, and Mikhailovsky Lane. This green space was established in 1925 and officially received its name in 1934. After its renovation in 1998, Mikhailovsky Square was revitalized and became known for the sculptures by Belarusian artist Vladimir Zbanov. The most popular of these are "Girl with an Umbrella," "Stranger," and "Smoker." The sculpture "Girl with an Umbrella" commemorates the victims of the 1999 tragedy at the "Nyamiha" metro station, where 53 people died in a crush. "Stranger" — a delicate image of a girl sitting on a bench on a warm summer day — attracts many visitors for photo sessions. "Smoker," modeled after film producer Vladimir Golynsky, also draws interest due to its mystical story. Mikhailovsky Square is not only a place to enjoy the shade of trees and the beauty of flower beds but also a cultural landmark of Minsk. The square is particularly popular among students as it is located near the educational buildings of Belarusian universities. Its proximity to the railway station makes it a convenient spot for relaxing and waiting for transport. A walk through Mikhailovsky Square will give you a sense of lightness and tranquility, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the unique artistic atmosphere. This green oasis, adorned with elegant sculptures, will undoubtedly leave a pleasant impression and become a must-visit stop on your journey through Minsk.
