Belarusian State Philharmonic

Belarusian State Philharmonic

3 min. to read

Belarusian State Philharmonic (Belgosfilarmoniya) is one of the main cultural institutions in Minsk and all of Belarus, located at 50 Nezavisimosti Avenue. The building, designed by architect G. M. Benediktov, was officially opened on April 25, 1937, and has since been the center of the country's musical life. At the time of its opening, the philharmonic included a symphony orchestra, an orchestra of Belarusian folk instruments, the Belarusian Folk Song and Dance Ensemble, as well as the Belarusian Choir Chapel. A significant moment in the history of the institution was in 1963, when a new 930-seat concert hall was opened near Yakub Kolas Square. This event made it possible to significantly expand the performance program and drew attention to classical and folk music. In the same year, the first organ concert took place here, marking an important milestone in the development of organ music in Belarus. Significant changes occurred in the early 2000s when the philharmonic building underwent a major renovation. In 2004, the renovation was completed, significantly improving the acoustics and updating the interior. The main hall was modernized, and its seating capacity was reduced to 688 seats, improving sound quality. Additionally, a smaller 200-seat hall was opened, named after the prominent Belarusian composer Grigory Shirma. Today, each concert season of the Belarusian State Philharmonic has its own unique program, featuring performances by both domestic and international musicians. The philharmonic plays an important role in reviving cultural traditions, promoting serious music, and supporting Belarusian composers. Some of the philharmonic's most famous projects are the "Minsk Spring" and "Belarusian Musical Autumn" festivals, which have become annual events in the country's cultural life. The Philharmonic also houses the Vladimir Mulyavin Museum, where authentic items related to the life and work of the famous Belarusian musician are displayed. The exhibition includes his personal belongings, including the piano he played, as well as archival recordings of his concerts. Belarusian State Philharmonic (Belgosfilarmoniya) continues to delight visitors with high-quality musical programs, offering a wide range of events — from classical concerts to modern musical performances. You can reach the Philharmonic by public transport: the nearest metro station is "Yakub Kolas Square." Buses No. 100, 115э, 19, 25, trolleybus No. 22, and trams No. 1, 11, 1n, 5, 6 also go there. The Philharmonic is open daily from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM, inviting everyone to enjoy the unique atmosphere of live music in one of the best concert halls in Minsk.
