Chizhovskoye Reservoir in Minsk is one of the significant water bodies of the city. Despite its rich history and importance for infrastructure, today this reservoir remains technical, and the possibility of transforming it into a recreation area for residents raises many questions.
Main Difficulties in the Path to Renovation
One of the key obstacles to transforming the reservoir into a recreation zone is the significant financial investment required. The area of the water body is 1.5 km², and its maximum depth reaches 4.7 meters. In the central part of the reservoir, the thickness of the silt deposits reaches 2.5 meters, and their total volume as of 2020 was 830 thousand cubic meters.
Dmitry Shunkin, deputy chairman of the Minsk City Committee for Natural Resources, explained that the main issue is the disposal of this volume of silt. The use of the "Trostenetsky" landfill is not possible because it is intended for the burial of municipal waste from Minsk.
Projects and Prospects for Cleaning
Designers from "Belkommunproject" have developed four possible methods for cleaning the reservoir. The most optimal option involves extracting the silt deposits using a dredger and subsequently dewatering them on a mobile installation. However, implementing this plan will require significant financial investments and will take several years.
From an ecological perspective, such measures are necessary, but the question of whether swimming will be allowed in the reservoir remains open. Even after cleaning is completed, the water will have to be tested by the sanitary and epidemiological service. If the quality indicators do not meet the established standards, the ban on swimming will remain in place.
Historical and Technical Role of the Reservoir
It is important to remember that the Chizhovskoye Reservoir was originally created as a technical facility. It provides water to the CHPP-3, one of the oldest energy enterprises in Belarus, which supplies heat to over 20% of the residents of Minsk.
In addition, only rainwater flows into the reservoir, which is treated using modern facilities. Industrial and municipal wastewater does not enter it, which helps maintain stable environmental conditions.
What Awaits Chizhovskoye Reservoir?
In the coming years, the fate of the reservoir will depend on the adoption of one of the proposed cleaning projects. According to experts, if all requirements are met, it could become a full-fledged recreation area for the people of Minsk.
However, the technical purpose of the reservoir and the high costs remain key factors affecting its future. Specialists and city authorities continue to work on solving this problem so that Chizhovskoye Reservoir can delight Minsk residents not only with its functionality but also with its beauty.
