On December 13, 2024, Google will cease supporting AdSense, AdMob, and Ad Manager accounts for users from Belarus. This means that monetization through these platforms will no longer be possible.
The company has started sending warning emails to all affected users, detailing the account deactivation process. According to the notification, Google will make final payments for December 2024 earnings between January 21 and January 26, 2025, provided the account is not blocked from receiving payments and the earnings meet the minimum threshold.
What will happen to the remaining funds?
Google states that it will attempt to pay out the remaining balance within 60 days of the notification. However, users must manually close their accounts to receive the final payment.
Belarusian users are already actively discussing this news in dedicated communities.
Reasons for the suspension
Google's email does not specify the official reasons for this decision. However, experts attribute it to the tightening of U.S. economic sanctions against Russia and Belarus. It is worth noting that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury recently expanded sanctions, including restrictions on dealings with banks connected to Russia's Financial Messaging System (SPFS), which serves as an alternative to SWIFT.
Belarusian banks joined SPFS back in late 2021, potentially leading to additional U.S. sanctions. These restrictions likely influenced Google's ability to continue business operations in the country.
Alternatives for users
Many Belarusian website and mobile app owners are now forced to look for other monetization platforms. Potential solutions being discussed include advertising networks such as Yandex, PropellerAds, and other international platforms.
Google's decision has dealt a serious blow to local developers and webmasters who relied heavily on the company's services for income. Nevertheless, adapting to new conditions remains a critical task in an ever-changing economic environment.
