In the height of planning summer vacations, Belarusian sanatoriums are demonstrating an impressive level of demand. According to the Republican Center for Health Improvement and Sanatorium-Resort Treatment of the Population, by mid-April the majority of the country's health resorts are virtually fully booked for the summer season. The occupancy rate is especially high in July, when it reaches a record 96%.
Occupancy Statistics: Book in Advance
Gennady Bolbatovsky, Director of the Republican Center for Health Improvement, revealed impressive occupancy figures for Belarusian sanatoriums at a recent press conference:
- For May–June: 90% of beds are already booked
- For July: 96% of beds are occupied
- For August: 83% of beds are reserved
These figures indicate the growing popularity of domestic health resorts. According to official data, about 600,000 people are expected to undergo health treatments over the three summer months, of which approximately 400,000 are children.
Health Infrastructure: 97 Sanatoriums Serving Public Health
Today, the sanatorium-resort network of Belarus includes 97 sanatoriums with a total capacity of 27,700 beds. This is an impressive potential for the health improvement of both adults and children. Additionally, around 6,000 camps of various types will operate for the latter, including 1,500 with round-the-clock accommodation.
"We see that demand grows every year, and our country has potential for constructing new facilities. Our center and regional administrations face the task of attracting investments in construction. This work is underway and will be intensified. Since there is demand, it must be met," — noted Bolbatovsky.
Economic Comparison: Belarusian Sanatoriums vs. Turkish and Egyptian Resorts
One of the main topics of the press conference was comparing the cost of vacations at Belarusian sanatoriums with popular foreign destinations. According to Bolbatovsky, staying at domestic health resorts is significantly cheaper:
- Cost per bed-day in a Belarusian sanatorium (double room, summer season): 140 Belarusian rubles
- The comparable rate in Turkish hotels: around 240 Belarusian rubles
- In Egyptian hotels: approximately 250 Belarusian rubles
This means that vacations in foreign destinations cost almost twice as much, not including airfare. However, Bolbatovsky himself admits that such a comparison is "not entirely correct."
The main difference between sanatorium-based vacations and beach tourism lies in the services provided. The price of a package to a Belarusian sanatorium includes a full range of medical treatments, whereas hotels in Turkey and Egypt mainly offer food and accommodation services.
“Therefore, it is not entirely correct to compare these prices, because the criteria for these vacations are completely different,” — emphasized the center’s director.
Affordability of Sanatorium Vacations: Is It Still Within Everyone's Reach?
Despite being relatively cheaper compared to foreign resorts, sanatorium vacations in Belarus remain unaffordable for a significant part of the population, especially pensioners. A video circulated recently on social networks in which a pensioner calculated that, based on her annual pension savings, she can afford only 2.36 days at the "Radon" sanatorium.
With package prices ranging from 280 to 380 rubles per day, sanatorium treatment is out of reach for many elderly people, even with medical recommendations.
Children's Vacations: The Cost Question
As for children's vacations, the officially stated average cost of a package to a children's country camp is about 675 rubles. However, parents claim that this amount does not include health treatments, meals, transportation, and additional fees, which makes the real cost significantly higher.
Global Trends: Turkey Is Repositioning Itself
An interesting context is added by the statement of the Turkish Ambassador to Belarus, Güçlü Cem Işıka, that his country is intentionally changing its positioning:
“Work is being done to rid Turkey of the image of a country where vacations are cheap. It is planned to elevate it to the rank of those countries where vacations are of high quality and dignity,” — explained the diplomat.
Conclusions and Prospects
The high occupancy rates of Belarusian sanatoriums indicate growing demand for health vacations within the country. At the same time, the industry faces important tasks:
- Modernizing existing facilities to meet modern quality standards
- Expanding the network of sanatoriums to satisfy growing demand
- Developing a flexible pricing policy that makes sanatorium vacations accessible to various segments of the population
These measures will allow the Belarusian sanatorium-resort sector not only to maintain but also to strengthen its position in the health tourism market, providing citizens with affordable and quality treatment in comfortable conditions.
