Marat Kazei Square

3 min. to read

Marat Kazei Square, also known as Pioneer Park, is one of the cozy and historically significant places in the center of Minsk. This green corner, spread along the left bank of the Svisloch River, is located at the intersection of Yanki Kupaly and Kuybysheva Streets. With an area of 7.1 hectares, the square attracts both locals and visitors with its peaceful atmosphere, picturesque nature, and rich historical heritage. The history of the square begins in the post-war years. On the site of residential buildings destroyed during World War II, a park was laid out between 1948 and 1950, designed by architect I. M. Rudenko. Initially, it was a children's park, named Pioneer Park. However, in 1959, after the installation of a monument to the young pioneer hero Marat Kazei, the park was renamed in his honor. The central attraction of the square is the monument to Marat Kazei, created by the famous Belarusian sculptor S. I. Selikhanov and architect V. M. Volchek. The monument depicts the fourteen-year-old Hero of the Soviet Union holding a grenade, ready to perform his last heroic deed. The park's alleys converge towards this monument, making it the central point and symbol of the place. Marat Kazei Square is also known for its rich greenery. Here, you can find more than 26 species of trees, including Siberian fir, blue spruce, silver maple, heart-shaped linden, and horse chestnut. Even on the hottest days, you can always find coolness and shelter in the shade of the sprawling trees. In addition, a workout area was added to the square in 2014, attracting lovers of active recreation. Pull-up bars, parallel bars, and other exercise equipment make the square a popular spot not only for walks but also for sports activities. Thanks to its convenient location, Marat Kazei Square has become a favorite spot for walks among residents and tourists. It is located between Yanki Kupaly Park and Square on Paris Commune Square, making it a convenient stop on walking routes through the central part of the city. This place is perfect for enjoying the peace and fresh air, reading a book, or simply relaxing in the shade of the trees. Marat Kazei Square is a true oasis in the heart of Minsk, where you can immerse yourself in history and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
