Minsk Fully Transitions to Artesian Water: A Historic Step for the City

Minsk Fully Transitions to Artesian Water: A Historic Step for the City

January 10

10 January 2025 became an important date for the residents of Minsk: the city fully transitioned to the use of artesian water. This project, conceived in 2022, culminated in the ceremonial launch of the system in the presence of President Alexander Lukashenko and representatives of the city administration.

Project History

The idea to switch Minsk to underground water sources was proposed back in 2022. Previously, a significant portion of the city's water came from surface sources, including the Vileyka water system. The Moskovsky and Frunzensky districts, which house almost half of the city's population, consumed up to 120–130 thousand cubic meters of water daily from surface sources. In July 2022, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on the implementation of an investment project aimed at providing the capital with completely clean artesian water. Over two and a half years, 90 new wells were drilled, and more than 40 old ones were modernized. Additionally, 114 kilometers of large-diameter main water pipelines were constructed, and pumping equipment was upgraded.

Launch Ceremony

The ceremonial launch of the new water supply system took place at the "Shomyshlitsa" pumping station, where Alexander Lukashenko, accompanied by Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Vladimir Kukharev, symbolically opened a valve to begin the supply of artesian water. The President emphasized the significance of the project: “Clean water is the greatest wealth we possess. Today, Minsk has become one of the few cities in the world fully supplied with artesian water. This is an achievement that people will remember forever.”

Economic Efficiency of the Project

The initial estimated cost of the work was 850 million rubles. However, through procurement optimization and rapid task execution, approximately 150 million rubles were saved. Vladimir Kukharev noted that this project was a significant step in improving the quality of life for city residents.

How Has the Water Supply System Changed?

Previously, one-third of Minsk received water from surface sources, requiring complex purification processes. Now, water is sourced directly from underground artesian sources. This eliminated many treatment stages and ensured cleaner and safer water for residents. The average daily water supply to the city's network is 430–460 thousand cubic meters, all of which now comes from artesian wells.

Caring for the Future

The President of Belarus urged residents to use water resources responsibly: “At times, we forget that clean water is a unique treasure that must be preserved.” The year 2025 has been declared the Year of Improvement in Belarus. In addition to enhancing water supply, authorities plan to construct a waste processing plant.

How to Check Water Quality?

For residents' convenience, "Minskvodokanal" offers an online service to check water quality in their homes. By entering an address, residents can view water analysis results across 18 parameters. The project to transition Minsk to artesian water has become an example of effective resource management and care for public health. Now, all residents of the capital can enjoy clean and healthy water straight from the tap.
