State Flag Square

State Flag Square

The State Flag Square of the Republic of Belarus in Minsk is one of the youngest attractions of the capital. Officially opened on July 2, 2013, on the eve of the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus, the square has become a symbol of national pride and tradition. The project was designed under the leadership of architect Anna Aksyonova, and the ceremonial opening took place in the presence of top state officials, including the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. The event was accompanied by the anthem, artillery salutes, and a concert featuring popular Belarusian performers. The architectural ensemble of the square is a circle with a radius of 50 meters, at the center of which stands a majestic 70-meter stele-flagpole, crowned with the main symbol of the Republic of Belarus — the state flag. At the top of the flagpole is a flag canvas measuring 14 by 7 meters, with a total area of 98 square meters and weighing 25 kilograms. The flag is made of durable, waterproof fabric resistant to bright sunlight, allowing it to retain its colors and appearance over time. An interesting feature of the flagpole’s construction is its slight sway under wind pressure at height, ensuring stability and safety in all weather conditions. The square was chosen with the consideration that the constant wind flows in this part of Minsk would allow the flag to always flutter. This choice is symbolic: it emphasizes movement and strength, qualities inherent to the people of Belarus. At night, special lighting transforms the stele-flagpole into a shining city beacon, creating a festive atmosphere. In addition to the flagpole itself, the State Flag Square is adorned with numerous steles featuring the coats of arms of Minsk and all the country’s regions, as well as a map of Belarus and the text of the national anthem. This adds an extra layer of symbolism to the space, allowing residents and visitors to feel a sense of respect for Belarusian history and culture. A central 24-meter-long staircase connects the square to the BelExpo Pavilion, creating a unified space for ceremonial and public events. The opening of the square was accompanied by many symbolic events. The first-ever solemn act of taking an oath of allegiance to the national flag was held here. The ceremony involved notable figures from the fields of science, culture, sports, and industry. To conclude the celebration, the skies over Minsk were lit with fireworks and thousands of balloons in the colors of the national flag. This event was broadcast live on major Belarusian TV channels, allowing residents across the country to witness this historic moment. The State Flag Square in Minsk has become a significant location for important state and patriotic events. Celebrations for the Day of the State Emblem and Flag, civic and patriotic holidays, as well as ceremonies welcoming foreign delegations, are held here. Thanks to this, the square plays a key role in shaping the capital’s image and strengthening Belarus’ national identity. The State Flag Square has also become a popular tourist destination in Minsk. With its unique architectural design and rich symbolism, the square attracts both locals and foreign tourists who can learn about the history and culture of Belarus and take memorable photos with the majestic flag in the background. A walkway along the square’s perimeter provides an opportunity for leisurely strolls and enjoyment of the surrounding views. Thus, The State Flag Square of the Republic of Belarus is not only an important symbol of statehood but also a place that brings together people who appreciate the history and cultural heritage of the country.
