Obelisk "Minsk – Hero City"

Obelisk "Minsk – Hero City"

3 min. to read

The architectural complex "Minsk – Hero City" is an important symbol of the Belarusian capital, dedicated to the heroism of its residents during the Great Patriotic War. The main elements of this complex are a 45-meter-high concrete obelisk and the bronze sculpture "Motherland." They are located at the intersection of Pobediteley and Masherov Avenues, serving as significant architectural accents of the city. The obelisk was unveiled on May 8, 1985, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Victory. It is set on an artificial mound and crowned with a gilded star and a laurel branch—symbols of triumph and peace. At the base of the monument, there is a plaque with the text of the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, which on June 26, 1974, awarded Minsk the title of "Hero City" for the courage of its residents in fighting the occupiers and for its contribution to the partisan movement in Belarus. The 5.5-meter-high sculpture "Motherland" complements the obelisk, embodying strength, glory, and victory. This bronze monument symbolizes maternal care and protection, adding emotional depth to the complex. The complex "Minsk – Hero City" is part of the architectural ensemble of the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War. The museum was opened on July 2, 2014, and its facade symbolizes a salute in honor of Victory. The museum, along with the obelisk and sculpture, forms a unified composition that immortalizes the memory of wartime events and the heroism of the Belarusian people. Over the years, large-scale events such as wreath-laying ceremonies and festive parades have been held at the stele, coinciding with Victory Day (May 9) and Belarus Independence Day (July 3). This place has become a traditional gathering spot for city residents and guests wishing to honor the memory of the war heroes. The stele is also popular among newlyweds, who often choose it for photo sessions and to lay flowers. Minsk was under occupation for more than 1,100 days during the Great Patriotic War, and its residents demonstrated incredible courage, actively participating in the partisan movement. This contribution became the basis for awarding the city the title of "Hero City." The stele symbolizes gratitude for the sacrifices made in the name of freedom. Today, the "Minsk – Hero City" complex is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus. It remains one of the main landmarks of the city, attracting thousands of tourists and residents each year who seek to honor the memory of the heroes and learn more about the glorious history of the capital.
