Architectural features
The design of the shopping center is thought out down to the last detail.
Each level is decorated in the style of a particular era:
- The lower floor is styled after the 17th century
- The middle level is done in the style of classicism
- The upper floor is designed in the Art Nouveau style
All levels are connected by two spacious atriums with fountains, crowned with glass domes. In the main atrium there is a monumental fountain with a figure of Diana, the goddess of the hunt, and her companions.
The above-ground part of the complex is a system of terraces with staircases and balustrades, styled after
traditional Russian market arcades. The square is decorated with sculptural compositions based on Russian fairy tales: “Alyonushka”, “Ivan Tsarevich and the Frog Princess”, “The Crane and the Fox”, “The Old Man and the Golden Fish”.
The “World Clock” fountain — the main attraction
The “World Clock” fountain is considered one of the calling cards of central Moscow. It crowns the main atrium of the shopping center and is a unique structure.
The transparent dome is decorated with a depiction of the map of the Northern Hemisphere and rotates continuously, making a
full revolution in 24 hours. In the center of the dome there is a sculpture of Saint George the Victorious — the patron saint of Moscow, created by Zurab Tsereteli.
The dome is divided into 24 sectors corresponding to the number of time zones. At the bottom there are numerals, and above each one — 12 small lamps (each representing 5 minutes). Thanks to this system you can
find out the exact time in any capital of the Northern Hemisphere.

History of the complex
Construction of the underground shopping center began in 1995 and was completed by 1997. The project was developed by the Moscow institutes
Mosinzhproekt and Mosproekt.
The idea of creating a large-scale underground complex in a historic center saturated with engineering communications was quite bold. Nearby are the Kremlin and Red Square, and three metro lines run underground.
Before the work started, thorough studies were carried out on the strength of historical buildings and underground structures. Construction was carried out using innovative technologies, which made it possible to reroute all utilities out of the construction zone without disrupting the vital systems of the surrounding buildings.
In 1997 the project
won the MIPIM AWARDS international competition, which confirmed its high quality and innovative nature.
The historical name: from old trading rows to the present day
The name “Okhotny Ryad” has a centuries-long history. In old Moscow, this was the site of trading rows where hunters sold game from the forests around Moscow — hazel grouse, black grouse and other birds.
Originally, trade was conducted on the territory of today’s Historical Museum, but in the 18th century the rows were moved beyond the Neglinka River. After the fire of 1812, the wooden stalls were replaced by stone buildings.
Gradually, Okhotny Ryad became a symbol of the Moscow merchant class, associated with hospitality and lavish feasts. In 1935, a street appeared on the site of the square, which in 1961 was renamed Marx Avenue, and in 1990 its historical name was restored.
The modern shopping center continues these traditions — it is a place of luxurious trade and a point of attraction for residents and guests of the capital.
History really does move in a spiral!
