Moscow Metro Unveils "Moscow-2026" Trains and Driverless Tech for 2026

Moscow Metro Unveils "Moscow-2026" Trains and Driverless Tech for 2026

April 10,5 min. to read

Moscow Metro, one of the busiest and most extensive in the world, is preparing to launch a new generation of trains called "Moscow-2026". This project promises to elevate the capital’s subway to a new level of comfort, efficiency, and technology. Details on when test trials will begin, which lines will be affected by the innovation, and what other changes await passengers were provided by Moscow’s Deputy Mayor for Transport and Industry, Maxim Liksutov.

"Moscow-2026" Test Trials: Timelines and Plans

According to Maxim Liksutov, the development of the "Moscow-2026" train is already in full swing. In an interview with RIA Novosti, he mentioned that the first test trials without passengers might begin as early as 2025. This will mark an important stage in the preparation for the full operation of the train.
"The 'Moscow-2026' train is indeed under development, and this year we plan to receive the trains for test trials, that is, without passengers. This is an important cycle of tests so that by 2026 these trains can fully begin operating with passengers," noted Liksutov.
After the successful completion of the test trials, the new trains will begin carrying passengers in 2026. The first line to feature "Moscow-2026" will be the Zamoskvoretskaya Line — one of the oldest and most heavily utilized branches of the Moscow Metro. This decision will allow for the renewal of the rolling stock, much of which on this line has long required replacement.

What is Known About the "Moscow-2026" Train?

"Moscow-2026" is positioned as a next-generation train that will distinguish itself from its predecessors with improved features. Although the exact technical details have not yet been disclosed, it is expected that the train will offer:
  • Enhanced comfort for passengers;
  • Smoother and quieter rides;
  • High energy efficiency and reliability.
These improvements are a logical continuation of the modernization of the Moscow Metro, which already involves the implementation of modern technologies and infrastructure upgrades.

Driverless Trains: Another Step into the Future

In parallel with the development of "Moscow-2026", the Moscow Metro is preparing to launch driverless trains. Existing "Moscow-2020" trains are being modernized for this purpose. Test trials for the driverless trains will begin in 2025 and will be conducted on the Big Circle Line (BCL) at night to avoid disrupting the operation of passenger trains.
"This year, it is planned to launch the 'Moscow-2020' trains, retrofitted for driverless operation, in a test mode," added Liksutov.
The introduction of driverless technology is an ambitious project that may eventually extend not only to the BCL but also to other metro lines. Such "smart" trains will enhance safety and operational precision, as well as optimize the metro’s schedule.

Seamless Rails: Quiet and Smooth Journeys

In addition to the new trains, the Moscow Metro is actively updating its infrastructure. In 2025, another 15 kilometers of seamless rails are scheduled to be installed, making journeys quieter and more comfortable. Currently, about 400 kilometers of such rails have already been laid underground — half of the total track length. Seamless rails reduce the number of joints, which decreases noise and vibration during train movements. Installation work will be conducted at night to avoid inconveniencing passengers. This "velvet path" has noticeably improved the quality of journeys on many metro lines.

Why is This Important for Moscow?

The introduction of the "Moscow-2026" train, the launch of driverless trains, and the installation of seamless rails are part of a large-scale program to modernize the Moscow Metro. These changes are aimed at:
  • Improving conditions for the millions of passengers who use the metro daily;
  • Enhancing the reliability and safety of the transport system;
  • Strengthening Moscow’s position as a city with one of the most advanced public transport systems.

What Awaits Passengers in the Coming Years?

The test trials of "Moscow-2026" and driverless trains in 2025 will be a significant step toward the future of the capital’s metro. As early as 2026, residents and visitors of Moscow will be able to experience the new trains on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line. With the gradual expansion of driverless technology and ongoing infrastructure upgrades, metro journeys will become even more convenient and enjoyable. The Moscow Metro continues to set high standards in the development of urban transportation by combining innovation with passenger comfort. Stay tuned for updates to catch the launch of "Moscow-2026" and other improvements in the subway system!
