VDNKh

VDNKh is a unique complex that combines architectural grandeur, a historical atmosphere, and a modern variety of entertainment. This vast open-air museum, located in the heart of Moscow, is a symbol of the achievements of the national economy and an important cultural center of the country. VDNKh attracts millions of visitors every year, offering its guests not only walks among Soviet architectural monuments but also rich educational, entertainment, and sports programs. In this article, we will tell you about the history of the creation of this legendary place, its transformations over the decades, modern opportunities, and unique facts that make VDNKh an unforgettable place to visit. Here you will learn how to get to the complex, what to do on its grounds year-round, and why it is considered one of Moscow's main attractions.

History of VDNKh

VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy) is one of the most famous and significant complexes in Moscow. Its history spans over 85 years, beginning in 1935 when the decision was made to create the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition. Initially, the location was chosen from several options, including Sokolniki, Krasnaya Presnya, and the Lenin Hills, but the final choice fell on the north of Moscow. The exhibition area is closely linked with the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy and the unique natural features of the area. The opening of VDNKh took place on August 1, 1939. In its early years, the exhibition operated seasonally, but World War II brought changes: the pavilions were converted into warehouses and barracks, and the area suffered from wartime damage. After the war, large-scale reconstruction began, which was completed in 1954. It was then that VDNKh acquired its famous appearance, including monumental pavilions and thematic zones. In 1959, the exhibition was reorganized, dividing it into agricultural and industrial sections, which contributed to its further development. In subsequent decades, VDNKh underwent several renamings and reconstructions. In the 1990s, with the collapse of the USSR, the exhibition experienced a crisis. Many pavilions were rented out as retail spaces, and some unique exhibits were lost. However, starting in 2014, VDNKh regained its status as a cultural and educational center.

Current State

Today, VDNKh occupies an area of 235 hectares and includes more than 20 museums, scientific centers, lecture halls, a petting zoo, an amusement park, the Moskvarium oceanarium, interactive platforms, and much more. After extensive reconstruction, recreational areas were improved, illegal structures were removed, and the borders between VDNKh, the Botanical Garden, and Ostankino Park became indistinct, creating a unified space for walking. One of the main symbols of VDNKh remains the "Worker and Kolkhoz Woman" sculpture, created by Vera Mukhina and Boris Iofan. This monument was first presented at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris and later installed in Moscow. Another iconic feature is the "Friendship of Peoples" fountain, adorned with figures of women in national costumes representing the Soviet republics.
