Evropeisky Shopping Mall

Evropeisky Shopping Mall

12 min. to read

Moscow attracts millions of tourists every year — they come to explore its historic landmarks, feel the rhythm of the metropolis and, of course, do some shopping. Among the most popular shopping destinations in the capital, the «Evropeisky» shopping and entertainment center stands out — a unique space that combines retail, entertainment and gastronomy under one roof.

Location and transport accessibility

The «Evropeisky» shopping and entertainment complex occupies a strategic position between Dorogomilovskaya Street and Kievsky Railway Station Square. It is a rare example of a large shopping center located in the immediate vicinity of the center of Moscow, which makes it exceptionally convenient to visit. Address: Moscow, Kievsky Railway Station Square, building 2. The main landmark is Kievskaya metro station on the Circle Line — literally a one-minute walk from the metro exit. Every day the complex receives about 140,000 visitors, which makes it the most visited shopping center in Russia and the second most visited in the world after Dubai Mall.

How to get there by public transport

Getting to the «Evropeisky» shopping center is as easy as possible thanks to a well-developed transport infrastructure:
  • Kievskaya metro station (Circle Line) — exit directly to the shopping center
  • Bus routes: 91, 119, 205, 205K, 324, 394, 474, 791, 902
  • Trolleybus routes: 7, 17, 34, 34K
  • The “Kievsky Railway Station” stop is located right at the entrance to the complex
For those who prefer comfort, taxi services are available: Yandex.Taxi, Uber, Gett, Maxim, «Citymobil» and other operators.

Parking for cars

Owners of private vehicles can use a spacious car park for 1,200 cars located on the fifth and sixth floors of the building. Entry is organized via a spiral ramp. Parking is paid; payment is made through machines installed next to the panoramic elevators. On weekends queues are possible due to high occupancy.

History of the shopping center

The history of the place where «Evropeisky» now rises dates back to the 1970s, when there was a small park here. In the 1990s the area was occupied by the large wholesale market «Kitezh», which became a landmark place for Muscovites. In 1995 the Moscow city administration decided to redevelop the territory between Kievsky Railway Station and the Berezhkovskaya Embankment. The project attracted entrepreneurs associated with the Elektronnaya Yarmarka at Rizhskaya and the Cherkizovsky market. Construction started in 2002 and lasted four years. Delays were connected with legal proceedings — supervisory authorities expressed concern about the safety of the construction work and identified violations. Despite the difficulties, in 2006 the complex opened its doors to its first visitors. Since its opening, «Evropeisky» has been the subject of debate in the architectural community. Critics argue that the building disrupted the established architectural ensemble of the square, visually overwhelmed the classical building of Kievsky Railway Station and increased the load on the transport system of the area. Supporters of the project, on the contrary, consider the shopping center an organic continuation of the commercial tradition of this place.

Architectural features and layout

The design of the shopping center was created by architect Yuri Platonov, inspired by the principle of traditional Russian shopping arcades. The building has an unusual triangular shape and occupies an impressive area of 180,000 square meters.

Structure of the complex

The complex consists of eight levels:
  • Two underground floors
  • Six above-ground floors
  • Two floors are allocated for parking (5th and 6th levels)
  • Nine entrances, one of which is connected directly to the metro

The concept of five European capitals

The interior space is organized around five atriums, each dedicated to a particular capital: «Moscow», «Paris», «Rome», «Berlin» and «London». The central atrium «Moscow» serves as the starting point, from which wide shopping streets radiate like rays to the other atriums. Each atrium is decorated in accordance with the architectural traditions of its respective capital. Visitors can see themed sculptures, plant compositions and small architectural forms. Navigation screens on each floor help visitors orient themselves in the vast shopping area. The facade of the building is eclectic: metal and glass towers, decorative columns, advertising structures, massive semi-circular canopies and bright illumination create a modern, dynamic image.
