On January 15, 2025, it was announced that a new public space and sports cluster would be created as part of the large-scale reconstruction of Gorky Park in Moscow. The renovation aims to upgrade and improve the park's infrastructure to meet the needs of residents and tourists. The project includes the construction of multifunctional pavilions, expansion of pedestrian areas, and transformation of the embankments.
One of the key stages of the project involves demolishing the Gorky Park Directorate building, which was in a dilapidated state. This decision was necessary due to damage the building sustained in 1942 when it was partially destroyed by an aerial bomb. Cracks in the load-bearing structures and perpetually damp walls led to the deterioration of wooden beams and columns, posing a safety risk.
A new pavilion, designed in a reimagined constructivist style, will be built on the site of the demolished building. The new space will feature retail areas, cafes, restaurants, and a multifunctional hall for events and film screenings. Visitors will also be able to enjoy views of the river from the building's roof and use an expanded pedestrian zone along the Krymsky Bridge, which will be more convenient for walking.
Additionally, the second phase of the improvement project on Pushkinskaya Embankment will include the construction of modern multi-story pavilions. These will house art galleries, souvenir shops, and relaxation areas. A distinctive feature of the new complex will be the use of riverfront space for recreational and beach areas, as well as the creation of multi-level zones for active leisure.
A significant part of the reconstruction will focus on developing sports infrastructure. A modern sports cluster will be established in Gorky Park, including an all-season pavilion, sports halls, and facilities for extreme sports. The new facilities will include universal training halls and courts for tennis, football, beach volleyball, and other sports. Fitness and extreme sports enthusiasts will also benefit from dedicated zones for parkour, BMX, and skateboarding.
This is not the first phase of Gorky Park’s redevelopment; previous sections of the park have already been modernized. The new reconstruction aims to further enhance this popular recreational destination for Muscovites and tourists. The work is being carried out without disrupting the park's operation and is expected to be completed in the coming years as part of a long-term plan to improve its infrastructure.
Soon, Gorky Park will welcome new and returning visitors in its updated form, offering a wide range of opportunities for recreation, sports, and cultural activities.
