Moscow Prepares for Launch of Second Autonomous Tram to Revolutionize Public Transport

Moscow Prepares for Launch of Second Autonomous Tram to Revolutionize Public Transport

January 18,2 min. to read

Moscow continues to actively develop innovations in public transport, currently in the final stages of preparation for the second launch of an autonomous tram. This project represents an important step in the creation of autonomous transport in Russia. In 2024, the first autonomous tram successfully finished the testing phase, covering over 3,200 kilometers through the city without violating traffic rules. A driver still controlled the tram’s actions, but the control system was already performing key functions. In 2025, this tram will switch to fully autonomous mode, marking a significant step forward for Moscow's transport system. Currently, specialists are preparing the second autonomous tram, which will be equipped with similar technologies. It has already passed initial tests at the Krasnopresnensky depot in Strogino. At this stage, the system replicates the driver's actions, and the testing conditions are as close to real city conditions as possible. Cameras, radars, and LiDARs are installed on board to ensure the safety and accuracy of the vehicle’s operation, allowing it to measure the distance to objects with precision down to two centimeters. The developers have also equipped a special workstation for analysts inside the tram to monitor the performance of sensors and other devices. These tests are a necessary step to prepare the second tram for the transition to autonomous control next year. It is noteworthy that the preparation of urban infrastructure for interaction with autonomous transport is also in full swing. Special equipment for interacting with trams has already been placed along the route, ensuring the stable operation of this innovative transport. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin supports the project, which could become an example for other cities in Russia and the world in terms of implementing autonomous transport in public transportation systems.
