Lutheran Square

Lutheran Square is located in the Moskovsky district of Minsk, within the boundaries of Kupriyanova, Karl Liebknecht, and Domashchevsky Lane. The square was named in 2009 when a new public space was created on the site of the Lutheran Cemetery, which was demolished in the 1970s. The history of this area is closely connected with the German population of the city. In the 19th century, there was a Lutheran cemetery here, which gave the name to the entire district—Pleshchanka—which was also referred to as the Lutheran Suburb at that time. The cemetery served as a burial place for the German community of Minsk, which was mainly Lutheran. Particular attention is drawn to the memorial marker in Lutheran Square, installed in 2019. It represents a book and symbolizes the multinational and tolerant past of Belarus, where there has always been room for hardworking people of different nationalities. Lutheran Square is an important historical and cultural landmark in Minsk, preserving the memory of its multinational past and the history of the city’s German community.
